Job Description

JOB TITLE: Benefits Advocate DEPARTMENT: Lower Sioux Health Care Center REPORTS TO: Health Services Director LOCATION: Lower Sioux Health Care Clinic and Community Member / Dependents Homes FLSA STATUS: Non- Exempt / Fulltime HOURS : Monday – Friday 8:30am to 4:30 pm, may occasionally require evenings and weekends. SALARY : Dependent on Experience

SUMMARY:

The Benefits Advocate is responsible for assisting Lower Sioux Community Members and their dependents with finding and applying for third party resources so that needed services may be billed and paid.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or GED Knowledge of or experience in working with third party resources such as Medicare/ Medicaid preferred. Experience in a clerical, secretarial or a medical office preferred. Excellent communication and customer service skills. Basic filing skills using alphabetical and numerical systems. Has working knowledge of basic medical terminology. Basic computer keyboard skills. Ability to operate computers, fax machines, telephones and copy machines. Knowledge and experience working with Native American communities, culture, customs, and tribal public health preferred. Must have current driver’s license, reliable personal transportation, proof of current insurance coverage, and insurability under the tribe’s auto insurance policy. Any employment offer is contingent on results of a drug and alcohol test and a health care background check as required by Centers for Medicare Services, as a condition of obtaining employment. American Indian/Alaska Native preference applies to equally qualified candidates. Must pass background checks allowing the individual to work in a Minnesota health care facility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Identification of Lower Sioux Community members and their dependents eligible for alternate health care coverage. Maintains current knowledge of ongoing changes of benefit plans, eligibility, and coverage criteria. Inform and answer Lower Sioux Community members and their dependents questions regarding Disability, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Assists Lower Sioux Community members and their dependents to complete applications for alternate resources. Receives information through interviews, electronic or mailed correspondence. Identifies Community members and their dependents with lapsed coverage and coordinates funding re-application or re-instatement. Collaborate with external agencies to explore additional patient healthcare funding sources. Assists Community Members and their dependents with questions or concerns while navigating through health care systems, engaging in home visits, as necessary. Advocates on behalf of Community Members and their dependents to ensure their health needs are met. Servies as back up for reception staff as appropriated. Maintains strictest confidentiality. Complies dress code and maintains a professional image. May serve on committees, task forces or advisory groups that service or have connection with the Lower Sioux Indian Community. Assumes responsibility for self-development. Participates in continuing education programs, workshops and conferences and adheres to licensing requirements. Provides community outreach and education in various venues (e.g., community events, health fairs and dinners). Provides mentorship/supervision to college student interns whose school has an approved contract with the Community. Supports high school career readiness programming to expose students to social work and related careers. Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

SKILLS KNOWLEDGE AND ATTRIBUTES:

Strong written and verbal communication skills. Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office Word, Access, PowerPoint, Excel) and database management skills. Ability to understand the needs of both the Lower Sioux Indian Community and the organizations the Lower Sioux Health Care Clinic and Community Health Program collaborates with. Attention to detail. Ability to meet deadlines. Strong contributor in team environments
